These terms must be in italics followed by colons, and the key words themselves (in normal font) to identify the principal aspects of manuscript (five maximum). The English "key words" must follow the "palabras clave" in Spanish.

Text: The text should begin after the key words. The italics should only be used for scientific names, initial words in the appropriate cases (e.g. key words as example) and for headlines (see below). Italics should not be used for common foreign words. The text must finish with concises acknowledgments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Condición Experimental 1: Bufo americanus

Monitoreo de patrones de conducta: La descripción comienza aquí.

References: Whitin the text, citations for articles of one or two authors must include their last names; articles written by more than two authors must be cited by first author's last name followed by "et al." The references series must order chronologically. For example, "Brodie y Campbell (1993) y Tinkle et al. (1995) demostraron que...".All the cited references must appear listed in Literature Cited and viceversa. Two or more references of the same author and year must be designated with small letters in italics; for example, "Best (1978a, b)."
The Literature Cited section must follow the acknowledgments. Full names of periodic publications and book editorials should be listed. The references must be double-spaced and listed alphabetically by author. Where several articles of the same principal author and coauthors are cited, references should be listed with second author last name and the other authors alphabetically, regardless of the number of authors. References must follow the prescribed format:

For references to be published in due course which have been accepted by the respective journal, should be cited as "In press" ("En prensa") in place of the pages numbers, and the full name of the journal must be cited. Manuscripts that are not "in press" or published cannot be cited in the text or Literature Cited.

Appendices: Detailed information that is not essential in the text (e.g., list of examinated specimens) can be located in appendices. These must follow Literature Cited and have headings: Appendix I, II, etc.

Tables: Each table must be double-spaced and appear on a separate sheet. It's location within the text must be indicated to the left of the table, or in the left margin  (it is usual to do it at the place where it is mentioned for first time). The number and legend of each table must be on the same page as the table. Within the table, only the first letter of each word should be in capitals (e.g. "Great average"). Lines inside the tables should be avoided, exept when they provide some clarity to separated column groups. Figure legends may be used (assigned with asterisk or numbers) after the table when detailed information is required (such as statistical significance levels).

Figures: A kit of high quality original figures or photographic impressions must be submitted to the Editor with the reviewed manuscript. The dimensions of the figures should not exceed 21.5 x 28 cm. The figures must be able to be reduced to fit into the width of one or two columns of the Sociedad Herpetológica Mexicana Bulletin. After reduction the figure letters should be 1.5–2.0 mm high, and decimals must be visible. A size scale must be included when appropriate. If a figure includes more than one picture, the printed copies must be placed next to each other on illustrated paper, and each one must be marked with a capital letter (A,B,C). The back of the figure must be marked with author name, figure number, and the final printed size selected (one or two columns). The figure legends should be separate from the figures, double-spaced on a separated sheet. Indicate in the left margin in the text where the figures should occur (usually where it is mentioned for the first time). The word "Figure" ("Figura") should be abbreviated in the text (e.g. Fig. 2) except at the beginning of a sentence. The figure abbreviations must follow the conventions listed below. All axes of graphics must be labelled.

Footers: Footers should only could be used for clarity as necessary, e.g. author's ACTUAL ADDRESS.

Numbers: Numbers of 10 or more should be written in arabic numerals, except at the beginning of a sentence. Numbers from one to nine should be written out in letters, unless followed by metric units (e.g., 4 mm), if used to designate something (e.g., experiment 2), or are separated by a dash (e.g., 2–3 scales). Only numbers of five or more digits should be separated with a coma (e.g., 9436 y 38,980). Time should be designated in 24 hours (e.g., 22:00 h). Dates must be ordered by day, month and year  (e.g., 15 of September of 2001). Decimals must be preceded by a number (e.g., 0.5, not  .5).

Abbreviations: For weight and length, International System Units should be used. These units must used in the text, tables and figures.
The common abbreviations in Spanish are:

X (average), n (sample size), N (number of chromosomes), no. (number), LHC (Snout-Vent-Length), P (Probability), gl (Degree of Error), DE y EE (Standard Shortcut and Standard Error, respectively),
l (liters), g (grams), m (meters), cm (centimeters), mm (millimeters) y ºC (degrees centigrade). Note that, n and P must be in italics, as statistical values (e.g., t, r2, Mann-Whitney U). The Greek letters (e.g., Β ) should not be written in italics. "Personal communication", dates or undefined terms should not be abbreviated.

Scientific Notes

Scientific notes should not exceed four pages in length. Notes should not have a resumen or abstract, but must have palabras clave and key words. The article format must be applied, except that the only headline will be Literature Cited.

Thesis Abstracts

Thesis abstracts should not exceed three pages in length. Name of thesis advisor, institution where thesis was presented, degree obtained and date of thesis must be included.

Reprints

Reprints should be ordered by the authors. A form must be completed when the paper is accepted. The payment of proofs must be received within a period of one month after the advice of expenses.
